Why currency conversion is not a pricing strategy
A China retail price converted into Canadian or U.S. dollars ignores landed cost, local channel margins, returns, customer service, taxes, fulfilment and the comparison set customers already use. A sustainable North American price must cover the new cost structure while giving an unfamiliar brand a credible value position.
People this guide is for
This guide is for Chinese founders, overseas marketing leads, ecommerce teams and retail operators who need to decide whether to enter as an accessible challenger, a specialist premium brand or a culturally distinctive alternative. The choice affects packaging, proof, channel selection, promotion and the creators a brand should brief.
Build the price floor before choosing the price point
Start with unit cost, freight, duties, brokerage, warehousing, fulfilment, payment fees, expected returns, samples, customer support and warranty exposure. Add distributor, marketplace or retailer margins where relevant. This creates a price floor; it does not yet tell the team what customers will accept.
Use a local comparison set
Map what a North American customer sees beside the product, not only the competitors headquarters tracks in China. Compare pack size, ingredients, warranty, availability, review volume, delivery time and promotional frequency. The same product can face different reference prices on Amazon, in an Asian supermarket and in a mainstream specialty retailer.
Trust changes willingness to pay
A new Chinese brand may need local reviews, clearer product education, bilingual support, creator demonstrations or a low-risk trial format before it can command its intended price. Discounting is only one trust tool. Excessive launch discounts can train customers to wait and make future retail negotiations harder.
30/60/90-day application plan
Days 1–30: calculate the channel-specific price floor and local comparison set. Days 31–60: test value messages, bundles and trial offers without inventing a false regular price. Days 61–90: review conversion, contribution margin, returns, repeat purchase and retailer feedback; then set guardrails for normal price, promotions and channel conflict.
Pricing claims need evidence
In Canada, a claimed regular price must be genuine and supported by actual sales or a good-faith offering period. Teams should keep promotion records and ensure that mandatory fees do not make the advertised price unattainable. Pricing is therefore a commercial, brand and compliance decision—not a translation task.
